Understanding Infant Brain Injuries

Infants are particularly fragile, which is why they must be handled with care throughout the birth process. If a baby is deprived of air while the mother is in labor, handled incorrectly during delivery, or if the baby is injured after birth, it could result in lasting brain damage. Most infant brain damage occurs due to some type of physical trauma, an infection, lack of oxygen, or complications caused by other medical issues.

Common Causes of Infant Brain Injuries

Physical Injuries

An infant’s skull is not fully developed until at least several months after birth, which means babies have particularly sensitive heads before and after delivery. If a nurse, doctor, midwife, or other medical practitioner is not careful, they might harm the baby’s head while using forceps, a vacuum, or other birthing tools, which may result in severe brain damage. Additionally, they might handle the baby incorrectly, by twisting the neck, failing to support the head, or causing physical trauma.

Oxygen Deprivation

During delivery, the baby must be monitored for signs of distress, which could indicate that the infant is not receiving enough oxygen. If the baby is deprived of oxygen for too long, an issue referred to as birth asphyxia, it could lead to permanent brain damage.

Oxygen deprivation might occur if the fetal heartrate isn’t properly monitored, if the doctor fails to order a C-section in time, or if the doctor fails to notice or address other serious birth complications. For example, the baby might be caught in the birth canal, tangled in the umbilical cord, placental separation may occur, or the mother’s blood pressure might drop. Any of these issues could cause the baby to lose oxygen. The baby could also lose oxygen if his or her airways aren’t cleared immediately after birth.

Infections

If the mother suffers a serious infection, it could cause serious birth complications or could spread to the baby, causing brain damage. Some potentially damaging infections include cystitis, venereal warts, pyelonephritis, and yeast infections. If left untreated, these conditions could leave the baby with developmental delays or might even cause fetal death.

Jaundice

Jaundice is a condition commonly caused by a buildup of bilirubin in the baby’s blood. Although this condition is somewhat common and definitely treatable, if it is not treated in a timely manner it could cause the baby serious brain damage.
